Ah, the simplicity or perfection. Or is it the perfection of simplicity? Every once in a while, a designer comes along that just nails what we want. This dress is sexy, comfy, and made to either wrinkle where you’ve got belly flab, or to stretch out where that belly is gloriously big (hint: the former is postpartum!). The fabric is perfect for summer, and for whenever you’re carrying your own personal heating device — either in utero or in a sling. I love this dress as a backdrop for a great necklace and earrings, or for the crispness of unadorned, lightly made-up skin. The split sleeve is a pretty detail. Nursing? Oh, I almost forgot. The cropped top layer — a bit scary when you see it on a hanger — simply disappears (I promise) into the ruching of the bodice. Lift it, and one one side you’ll find an adorable little ducky. The you can forget all that left side? right side? nonsense, and only have to remember whether you saw the Quackster or not. Perfect. Simple.

A delightful, three-quarter-sleeve nursing dress with smocking detail at neckline, waist, and a flutter sleeve. I like it off the shoulder, but if you need to wear a bra, wear it so it covers the strap. Or layer it with a nursing tank! Made of the softest pima cotton and modal blend that can be machine washed and dried. To nurse, just lift the shorter overlayer to access two vertical openings beneath.

The skill and care of the women of the Allied military nursing services was remembered gratefully by hundreds of thousands of wounded servicemen. The small peacetime services increased rapidly by enrolling reservists and volunteers; the great majority of the nurses who cared for Allied casualties were ‘civilians in uniform’, who worked tirelessly under difficult conditions and – in tented hospitals close to the front lines – in real danger; many nurses paid for their devotion with their lives. This first-ever fully illustrated study of the US, British, Commonwealth, and other nursing organisations includes many unpublished photographs and 24 meticulously illustrated colour figures.
